A strong interview is what turns an application into an offer. Whether you are an HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire or BIM engineer, interviewers test the same things: can you actually design and deliver, do you know the codes, and can you communicate clearly. This is a practical set of the most common MEP engineer interview questions with sample answers and the reasoning behind them, so you walk in ready.
Use these as a framework, not a script. Interviewers can tell a memorised answer from real understanding - so learn the method behind each answer and adapt it to your own projects.
General & Behavioural Questions
Almost every MEP interview opens with these. Prepare real examples with numbers.
- Tell me about yourself. Give a 60-90 second summary: your discipline, years of experience, the sectors and project sizes you have worked on, your key software, and what you are looking for. End with why this role fits.
- Walk me through a project you delivered end to end. Pick one project and cover the scope, your role, the design decisions, the approvals you handled, and the outcome. This single answer tells the interviewer more than any other.
- Tell me about a difficult problem you solved. Use a clear structure: the situation, the task, what you did, and the result - ideally with a number (money saved, rework avoided, clash resolved, deadline met).
- Why should we hire you? Match two or three of your strengths to the exact needs in the job post - software, code knowledge, approvals, sector experience.
- What are your salary expectations? Give a researched range for the role and location, and say you are flexible for the right opportunity. Know the market first.
HVAC Engineer Interview Questions
- How do you calculate a cooling load? Explain that you account for the sensible and latent gains - envelope (walls, roof, glass), solar, occupancy, lighting, equipment, ventilation and infiltration - using a method such as ASHRAE or a Manual J for homes, and software like Carrier HAP for buildings.
- How do you size a duct? From the airflow (CFM) using a friction rate (about 0.08-0.10 in.wg/100 ft) or a velocity limit, then check the pressure drop and keep velocity in the quiet band.
- How do you size chilled-water pipe and pump head? Flow comes from GPM = BTU/h ÷ (500 × ΔT); pipe is sized to a velocity of about 4-8 ft/s; pump head totals the friction and fitting losses on the critical path.
- What is the difference between sensible and latent heat? Sensible changes temperature; latent changes moisture (phase) without changing temperature. Cooling coils handle both.
- What is a good chilled-water delta-T and why? Traditionally 10°F (2.4 GPM per ton); many modern designs use a higher delta-T to cut flow and pump energy, provided the coils can deliver it.
Electrical Engineer Interview Questions
- How do you size a cable? From the load current, pick the size that meets the ampacity in the correct temperature column, derate for ambient and grouping, then check voltage drop (keep it under about 3%).
- How do you calculate voltage drop? Explain the formula relationship (current, length, conductor resistance/reactance) and why long runs force a larger conductor even when ampacity is fine.
- How do you size a transformer and its protection? Size the kVA from the load (kVA = kW / PF), add a margin, round to a standard rating, and protect per the code (for example NEC 450.3 primary/secondary limits).
- What is short-circuit / available fault current and why does it matter? It is the maximum current at a fault; equipment must have an interrupting rating above it, and protection must be coordinated.
- Explain power factor and why we correct it. Power factor is real over apparent power; low PF wastes capacity and can incur utility penalties, so we add capacitors to correct it.
Plumbing / Public Health Interview Questions
- How do you size a water-supply pipe? From fixture units converted to a demand flow, sized to a velocity limit with acceptable pressure loss, considering the available pressure and the highest fixture.
- How do you size drainage and vents? By drainage fixture units and slope for gravity flow, per the plumbing code (IPC/UPC or local), keeping pipes at the right fill and providing adequate venting.
- What is a booster pump and when do you need one? It raises pressure where the mains cannot serve the top floors; sized from the peak demand flow and the head needed to reach the highest, farthest fixture at the required residual pressure.
Fire & Life-Safety Interview Questions
- How do you design a sprinkler system? Set the hazard classification, pick the design density/area from NFPA 13, then run the hydraulic calculation to confirm the most remote area is covered at the required pressure and flow.
- How do you size a fire pump? To NFPA 20, covering churn, rated and 150% flow points to meet the system demand.
- How do you design a fire alarm system? To NFPA 72 - detector spacing, notification coverage, and a battery/standby calculation.
MEP Coordinator & BIM Interview Questions
- How do you run a clash-detection cycle? Federate the discipline models, run clash detection in Navisworks, categorise and assign the issues, track them to closure, then re-run to confirm.
- Which service takes priority when two clash? Generally gravity systems (drainage) win over pressurised services, large ducts are hard to reroute, and you must preserve access and maintenance space - resolved with the trades.
- What software do you use? Be honest and specific: Revit MEP, Navisworks, AutoCAD, BIM 360 - only list what you can actually demonstrate.
Codes, Standards & HSE Questions
Interviewers check that you know the standards for your market. Be ready to name the ones relevant to the region: ASHRAE, NFPA, NEC, IPC/UPC, IEC, SMACNA, and local authorities (Dubai Civil Defence, Kahramaa, Ashghal, SCE, MEW, EWA, and so on). Safety questions are common too - explain your awareness of site safety, permits to work, and why HSE matters on MEP projects.
